Eagles finish season in fifth place

Geylang International ended their 2023 Singapore Premier League season in fifth place following a 3-1 defeat against Asian Champions League-bound, Lion City Sailors at the Bishan Stadium on Saturday night.

The Eagles drew first blood in their final league game when Yushi Yamaya headed the visitors ahead in the 31st minute.

However, less than 10 minutes into the restart of the second half, Shawal Anuar pulled the Sailors level with a glancing header into the far corner. Hami Syahin’s thunderbolt effort in the 62nd minute then gave the home side the lead for the first time in the match.

The Sailors were reduced to 10 men after Lionel Tan was given his marching orders for denying the Eagles a goalscoring opportunity.

The Eagles could not capitalise on their numerical advantage and fell further behind when Haikai Pashia grabbed a breakaway goal to seal all three points for the Sailors.

Head Coach Noor Ali said: “The boys put up a great first-half performance and, to play like that against a quality team like Lion City Sailors is never easy. We want to thank the fans for supporting us throughout the season and we can only look forward to doing well in the Singapore Cup next.”

With the season over, the Eagles will turn their attention to the Singapore Cup, where they take on league champions Albirex Niigata in their opening match at Jurong East Stadium on September 29.

Ends.
