Eagles snap three-match winless streak with victory over Young Lions

Geylang International snapped their three-match winless streak in the Singapore Premier League with a 2-0 win over the Young Lions on Saturday.

The Eagles were back to their best as Iqbal Hussain and Amirul Adli scored in each half to secure all three points at the Jalan Besar Stadium, placing them fifth in the nine-team standings with 16 points.

Geylang International began their 12th game of the season with a strong offensive display and could have been a few goals ahead after Ahmad Syahir and Iqbal struck the post in the 26th and 29th minutes.

The Eagles’ persistent pursuit of an opening goal finally paid off in the 41st minute when Iqbal beat goalkeeper Aizil Yazid to a floated ball delivered by Vincent Bezecourt from the halfway line, before finishing it off in style.

This goal undoubtedly set the stage for a convincing victory, as Amirul reacted swiftly to slot in the rebound following Bezecourt’s excellent free-kick that hit the left post in the 70th minute.

A relieved Noor Ali said, “It’s definitely a good feeling to get three points again after going three matches without any. But credit still goes to the Young Lions for pushing us hard right until the end of the game.”

“Iqbal’s opener was crucial, and we obviously needed that one badly because before that, we hit the post twice. At that point, I was very worried that the same thing would happen to us again, as in the last three games where we squandered many scoring chances.”

Noor has called on his team to build on the win and maintain the positive momentum.

“While it’s good to score three points and two goals in this game, there’s still plenty of work to be done,” said Noor. “We have a tough game against Albirex coming up.”

Iqbal, who scored his third goal of the season, was delighted to play his part in helping Geylang International return to winning ways.

“I’m very grateful to contribute to the team. In the past few games, we’ve been trying hard but had some bad luck,” he said.

“I’m taking it one game at a time and striving to improve as much as I can in both matches and training. I would like to thank the coaches and teammates for instilling confidence in me.”
