Eagles bow out of Singapore Cup after away defeat to the Jaguars

Geylang International made an early exit from the Singapore Cup after falling to a 2-1 defeat to Tanjong Pagar United on Sunday evening.

The Eagles needed to beat the Jaguars by more than three goals and hope Tampines Rovers defeat Hougang United in the other Group B encounter.

They showed their resolve in getting the result and were denied from going ahead by the woodwork twice in the opening 30 minutes at the Jurong East Stadium.

Fareez Farhan thought he had struck first blood but saw his shot rebound off the bar in the eighth minute.

Vincent Bezecourt then breached the Jaguars’ defence in the 30 minute only to see his shot ricochet off the bar.

The breakthrough finally came for Geylang in the 41st minute when Hazzuwan Halim slammed home the ball after calmly taking it down off a cross from Faizal Roslan.

The joy lasted for only two minutes as Khairul Amri drew level for the Jaguars after tapping in from close range.

Reo Nishiguchi then put the Jaguars ahead for the first time in the match after he curled his shot beyond the reach of Zaiful Nizam in the 56th minute.

The Eagles went in search of their equaliser but were unable to break down the stout Jaguars’ defence, which stood firm until the final whistle.

Geylang International Head Coach credited his charges for putting up a battling performance despite suffering a third straight defeat in the Singapore Cup.

“Playing against Tanjong Pagar has never been easy. They are tough opponents. But we fought for every ball today and I applaud the boys for putting up a good fight. Our season has come to an end and I would like to thank all those who have supported us- win, lose or draw,” said Noor.
