Mighty Eagles soar with dominant 5-0 win over Tanjong Pagar

Geylang International stretched their unbeaten run to seven games after they thrashed Tanjong Pagar United 5-0 at the Jurong East Stadium on Saturday.

With their latest victory, the Eagles leapfrogged Tampines Rovers into fifth place on the AIA Singapore Premier League table with 23 points from 18 games

Geylang International got off to a dream start when Vincent Bezecourt fired the Eagles ahead barely two minutes after kick-off.

Under pressure from Huzaifah Aziz, Fathullah Rahmat lost the ball to the midfielder, who found Sime Zuzul on his left. The Croatian’s perfect pass to Bezecourt then saw the Frenchman strike the ball into the bottom left corner to give the Eagles the early advantage.

Zharfan Rohaizad then failed to stop a thunderous strike from Bezecourt, who has given time and space to shoot from outside the six-yard box. The goalkeeper’s failure to hold on to the ball allowed Takahiro Tezuka to easily nod the ball home, doubling the Eagles’ lead.

The Eagles piled more misery on the Jaguars two minutes later when Zuzul headed in his 10th goal of the season off a well-taken free-kick by Bezecourt.

After heading into the break with a three-goal cushion, Bezecourt got his second goal of the evening when his low strike from the edge of the box found the bottom right corner in the 56th minute of the second half.

Rio Sakuma then sealed a comfortable victory and made it five for the Eagles with a flick-on off a corner taken by Tezuka in the 67th minute.

Geylang International Head Coach Noor Ali said: “This will go down as one of the most memorable victories we have enjoyed this season.

“I’m truly proud of the boys’ performance. Everyone gave their best and fought as a very cohesive team and we did not give Tanjong Pagar many scoring opportunities. I cannot ask for more from these boys who were simply brilliant tonight.”
