Eagles beat the Tigers 2-0 to extend winning run
Geylang International climbed to sixth place in the AIA Singapore Premier League following their 2-0 win over Balestier Khalsa at Toa Payoh Stadium on Saturday.
It was a back-to-back win for Geylang International after they had earlier snapped their 11-game winless run against Tanjong Pagar last week.
Victory was especially important for Geylang International Head Coach Noor Ali and his charges. They are now determined to maintain their consistency following their barren run, which was a strong test of their characters.
“This win is vital for us as we are now coming out from our slump in form, and it’s important to maintain the consistency.
“Everyone was feeling the pressure at the club, and more importantly, as I have always stressed, we have to remain positive and come out of this together as a team,” said Noor.
It was a cagey goalless first half, with the Tigers enjoying the lion’s share of possession. However, they lacked the finishing touch to gain an early advantage with the opportunities they created.
The best chance in the first 45 minutes fell to Sime Zuzul after Ho Wai Loon lost the ball in the centre of the pitch, which Hairul Syirhan was forced to react and make a save off a shot from the Croatian.
The Eagles were awarded a penalty in the 47th after Madhu Mohana was judged to have handled the ball in the six-yard box. Zuzul made no mistake from the spot as he fired the Eagles into the lead and also recorded his sixth goal of the season.
An inch-perfect pass from Umar Akhbar to Hazzuwan Halim in the 77th minute then saw Geylang International double their advantage as the winger ran down the right flank before slamming the ball into the back of the net and sealing all three points for the Eagles.
