Zaiful to captain the eagles
Goalkeeper Zaiful Nizam has been named as the new captain for Geylang International Football Club.
The 34-year-old goalkeeper, who joined The Eagles from Balestier Khalsa in August last year, succeeds long-serving Yuki Ichikawa, who bade farewell to the club at the end of last season after making more than 200 appearances over the span of nine years.
Head Coach Noor Ali is confident he can count on the influential Zaiful to lead the side in the 2022 Singapore Premier League season.
A seasoned campaigner in the SPL, Zaiful is also no stranger to the captaincy role having previously skippered for The Tigers.
Zaiful has thanked the Club management for putting faith in him to steer The Eagles in their mission to secure a good finish in the league this season.
“Such a pleasant surprise for me to be entrusted with the armband as I have only joined the club not too long ago,” said Zaiful.
“It’s a massive honour to captain the Eagles and I will perform my utmost best to repay the management’s faith in me.
“I’ve assumed the responsibility before in my previous team, but for me to do it with Geylang International Football Club is really huge and set to be a new challenge altogether.”
The new Captain has swiftly called on the fans to get behind the team – starting with next the SPL season opener against the reigning champions Lion City Sailors at Our Tampines Hub on March 4.
“The team are looking forward to the fans being back here in the stands to cheer and support us throughout this season,” said Zaiful.
“We’ve got a new team with many fresh faces and the boys are really putting in the effort to fit in coach Noor’s football philosophy.
“All of us can’t wait to get cracking and impress this season. “We will have the first game at our home ground and we’re counting on the fans to rally behind the team. We got nothing to lose and will be giving 150%,” added the skipper.
