Eagles fall to stoppage-time winner by Young Lions

The Eagles lost 3-2 to the Young Lions after Ilhan Fandi’s stoppage-time winner ended their hopes of winning their second game in three days at Our Tampines Hub (OTH) on Saturday.

The match looked poised to end in a stalemate but took a dramatic twist deep into injury time when Ilhan slotted the ball home for the winner after the Eagles conceded a late corner.

It was a nervy start for the Eagles and they found themselves a goal down after Ilhan was brought down in the box by Wayne Chew in the fourth minute. Jacob Mahler made no mistake from the spot to give the Young Lions the early lead.

However, their advantage lasted for only two minutes as Amy, who was recently called up for the National Team centralised training, underlined his growing status by slamming a superb volley into the back of the net following a precise long ball from Yuki Ichikawa.

Matheus Moresche put the Eagles ahead in the 56th by stabbing home his rebound after his initial shot was saved. With seven minutes remaining in regulation time, the Young Lions started to threaten and pulled level after Ilhan’s looping header over Chew crossed the line. Ilhan then struck again at the death to cap a disappointing night for the Eagles.

Geylang International Head Coach Noor Ali said: “Young Lions put us under a lot of pressure and unfortunately fatigue and lack of concentration in the last 15 minutes cost us the game. I’m disappointed with the result but credit to the Young Lions, they put up a good fight.”
