With the signing of German player Thorsten Schneider, Geylang International fans have been eager to watch their new man in action. But an injury sustained in a friendly had ruled the lanky out of contention till the Eagles took to the field against the Stags in the first group match of the Starhub League Cup.
Head coach Jorg Steinebrunner decided to throw his fellow German into the deep end as he handed Thorsten a start and the latter did not disappoint, enjoying a decent debut as he got stuck in and was also a constant attacking outlet on the night before he made way for Shah Hirul in the second half.
Speaking to Eagles TV after the match, Thorsten was all smiles given his debut came against the rivals. He said: “I’m glad that I could contribute to the success and that we could succeed on my debut, especially against the defending champions.”
After a winning debut, Thorsten felt his performance will only get better. He said: “I needed a little time to get into the match. I felt that the communication with my fellow midfielders was not the best. I need to be more relaxed because I was too nervous.”
