Geylang International FC have been handed a favourable draw for the group stages of ‘The New Paper League Cup 2015’, alongside defending champions, Brunei DPMM FC, Hougang United FC and National Football League (NFL) outfit, Singapore Recreation Club (SRC).
‘The New Paper League Cup 2015 Draw’, was conducted in the afternoon of 11th June 2015 at the Auditorium of Singapore Press Holdings, in the midst of all players, coaches, staff and Football Association of Singapore (FAS) personnel.
The competition will be exclusively sponsored by The New Paper, and will henceforth be known as The New Paper League Cup.
The eventual champions and 1st runners-up of the tournament will be awarded S$30,000 and S$15,000 respectively. The ‘Most Valuable Player of the Tournament’ will also receive a MVP trophy on top of his, S$1000 cash prize.
A total of 10 teams from the S.League and NFL, will be competing in this year’s edition of the League Cup. Apart from the Courts Young Lions and Harimau Muda, all the S.League teams will be playing in the tournament, with NFL sides Singapore Recreation Club and Sporting Westlake completing the line-up of teams.
All ten teams were drawn into three groups, with Group A consisting of four teams.
The top two teams from Group A will qualify for the semi-finals, along with the winners of both Group B and C.
The winner of Group A will then face Group C in the semi-final, while the winner of Group B will take on the runners-up in Group A.
The Eagles reached the semi-finals of the competition last season, before being edged out in penalties, by the eventual champions, Brunei DPMM FC.
Geylang would be eager to seek redemption against Brunei DPMM, the most successful club in this competition with three triumphs to date, in the group stages. Apart from that tantalizing fixture, Steinebrunner’s charges will also come up against tricky matches with Hougang United and NFL conquerors, SRC.
The Eagles will be hoping to go one step further this year, and will be ambitious to clinch their first ever league cup silverware
Steinebrunner believes that it is a good draw and that the games against Brunei, Hougang and SRC will be exciting.
“The Eagles first target would be to finish top two in Group A and qualify for the semi-finals. I know it is not going to be easy task, but if we take each game in the right spirit alongside our determination, it will be possible,” added the German.
Overall, I am looking forward to the game as it will be a very exciting fixture.”
The German added, “Our (Geylang) target has always been, going as far as we can. This time, we hope to better our last year’s achievement and do well throughout the competition.”
