The StarHub League Cup 2013 continued on as the Bedok Stadium played host to the game between Geylang International FC and Hougang United FC. The promise of an exciting match was imminent as fans dressed in bright colours, sporting their team colours, made their way to the stadium.
It was the Eagles who started the game on a stronger note, definitely having home advantage. As the fans filled the air with chants, Geylang pushed forward, playing with incredible stamina.
The first half of the game saw the hosts having the upper hand with formation and possession of the ball, pushing the visitors and stretching their defenses.
Jozef Kaplan was a perennial thorn in the visitor’s side as he ran down every pass in the opposing half, causing the Cheetahs to give up possession. In the 40th minute, it was the Eagles danger man who stole the ball from the visitor’s defence, sprinted 30 metres but fired high and wide of the goal with only the goalkeeper to beat.
Not to be discouraged, the Eagles pushed on and it was none other than Jozef Kaplan who deservedly put the hosts into the lead as his header from a corner went unchallenged and sneaked into the bottom right hand corner of the visitor’s goal.
The second half saw the visitors step up their game as they sought the equaliser that would prevent them from being eliminated from the competition.
With a lightning quick counter attack, Jerome Baker was picked out from an accurate cross across the face of goal and was left with the easiest of tap-ins as the hosts were left brutally exposed as the Cheetahs equalised in the 58th minute.
With the score now at a deadlock, both teams played on the aggressive as the time ticked off the clock. Hougang had several chances to break the deadlock, but could not get a direct shot as the host’s custodian, Takuma Ito pulled off stellar saves and decisive interceptions to keep the scores level.
With 78 minutes into the game, Jozef Kaplan once again gave the Eagles the decisive lead as he coolly converted a penalty to give the hosts a 2-1 lead.
The goal proved decisive as Hougang was now throwing everything at the host’s defensive back-line. As they threatened the host’s goal mouth from corners and snap shots, the Eagle’s defensive fortress stood to the test and even the heroics of the Hougang custodian who ran the length of the pitch to aid his attacking force was not enough as the final whistle blew
With this victory, the Eagles cemented top spot in their group and are sure to qualify for the knockout phase of the Starhub League Cup.
Final score : 2-1
