StarHub League Cup Match Preview: Geylang International vs Tampines Rovers
By Eagles Admin on 6 July 2014
Geylang International start their quest for glory in the Starhub League Cup on Monday when they face off against Eastern rivals, Tampines Rovers at the Jalan Besar Stadium. Languishing in a mid-table position and having been knocked out of the RHB Singapore Cup, the league cup stands to be the only realistic chance for silverware this season, for the Eagles.
Grouped together with Warriors FC, both teams go into the match in a positive mood. The Eagles were buoyed by an impressive showing last time out as they beat Balestier Khalsa 1-0. Tampines Rovers meanwhile are enjoying good form at the moment. Since the 1-0 defeat to Geylang International back in early June, the Stags have registered a six match unbeaten run.
The run has been spurred on by a familiar face in the east, Jozef Kaplan. The former Geylang captain has netted four goals in seven matches and the Eagles’ backline which kept a clean sheet in the last match, will need a repeat of the defensive resilience against the Stags.
Geylang International used a more attacking 4-3-3 formation against in their last match but head coach Jorg Steinebrunner hinted at a change back to the usual 4-2-3-1 against the Stags. With new signing, Thorsten Schneider available, Geylang fans will be eager to catch a glimpse of their new forward against the Stags. Influential player Aliff Shafaein is also available for selection after serving his two match suspension during quarter final clashes with Balestier Khalsa.
Two rejuvenated sides, an eastern derby and a chance to take the lead in the group sets Monday’s clash up for 90 minutes of exhilarating football.
