Eagles drawn against Lao Police in RHB Singapore Cup 2015
Geylang International FC will host Laos side, Lao Police Club at the Bedok Stadium, in the ‘Preliminary Round’ of the coveted RHB Singapore Cup 2015.
The ‘RHB Singapore Cup 2015 Draw’, was conducted in the afternoon of 17TH April 2015 at the Ocean Financial Centre’s Event Plaza. The much anticipated draw, was greeted by many fans and local public alike whom had the chance to mingle and take pictures with the S.League players from various clubs.
This year, eight local S.League teams, alongside three invitational clubs will participate and compete in the top domestic club knockout competition for the desirable ‘RHB Singapore Cup’ trophy.
For this year’s edition, the three invitational teams are, Global FC (Philippines), Lao Police Club (Laos) and Svay Rieng (Cambodia). The trio will face Hougang United FC, Geylang International FC and Albirex Niigata (S) respectively in the ‘Preliminary Round’.
The winners of the preliminary matches will then, qualify for the ‘Quarter-Finals’, where they will face the other five Great Eastern Yeo’s S.League clubs namely Balestier Khalsa, Brunei DPMM, Tampines Rovers, Warriors FC and Home United.
The Singapore Cup runs concurrently with the S.League regular season, with the winners of the Singapore Cup competition going on to represent Singapore in the AFC Cup the following season.
Last season, the Eagles faced Woodlands Wellington in the preliminary round and advanced with 5-1 score line. Up next in the quarter-finals, they faced a resilient Balestier Khalsa side and the two-legged fixtures concluded at 2-2 on aggregate.
Unfortunately, the Tigers progressed as they edged out the Eagles with a 5-4 score line in penalties, and were eventually crowned champions after they defeated Home United 3-1 at Jalan Besar Stadium in 2014.
Geylang would be looking to better their previous performance and hopefully clinch the sought-after silverware this season. However, the first obstacle standing in their way is the 2012 Lao Premier League and 2014 Lao FF Cup champions, Lao Police Club.
Lao Police Club have previously, made an appearance in the 2013 edition of the RHB Singapore Cup, but were given the boot by Brunei DPMM in the preliminary round, when the latter netted four goals past them.
According to Eagles’ head coach, Jorg Steinbrunner believes that a team should never underestimate any team in the competition and go up against the opposition with all due respect.
“It is definitely an unknown draw (against Lao Police Club), and we really would like to know what the team is all about before making our preparations to game…For the players and the club, it will be a new experience playing against a foreign club. Overall, I am looking forward to the game as it will be a very exciting fixture.”
The German added, “Our (Geylang) target has always been, going as far as we can. This time, we hope to better our last year achievement of reaching the quarter finals and do well throughout the competition.”
