Night to forget for the Eagles
By Andrew Ang on 24 October 2014
They were on a good run of form, producing stellar performances in their fixtures against the bottom six teams and thus nobody expected what unfolded at the Bedok Stadium in Geylang International’s last home fixture of the season.
The Eagles were defeated soundly by Hougang United in a match that finished 4-0. An unfortunate deflection gave the Cheetahs the lead before a brace from Geison Moura and a brilliant strike from defender Firman Hanif rounded off what was a miserable night for Geylang International.
The home side started the match off with the unavailability of defender Joaquin Lopez. Yuki Ichikawa filled in at left back in the Argentinian’s absence, which meant that Fabian Kwok started in second consecutive match alongside Kento Fukuda in the centre of the defence.
Further up the pitch, Thorsten Schneider was given a starting berth behind club top scorer, Leonel Felice.
The match got off to a cagey opening as both sides struggled to get a real hold of the game. Long balls were booted clear with no real direction while the forwards from both sides lacked any real urgency to hassle and harry the defenders.
It took 13 minutes for the Eagles to register any real intent on the opposition goalmouth. Leonel Felice took the ball and sensing an opportunity, shot towards goal only to see his effort trickle past the post. It proved to be the closest the home side came to scoring on the night.
But against the run of play, Hougang United took the lead in unexpected fashion. A Wahyudi Wayid cross was inadvertently turned in by Kento Fukuda as the Japanese attempted to head the cross away. 1-0 to the Cheetahs and they never looked back.
The second goal came minutes after the break as Geison Moura found plenty of space behind the Eagles backline and his shot from just inside the box beat Siddiq Durimi at his near post.
Minutes later, Firman Hanif capitalized on hesitant defending to pounce on a ball outside the box and sent his shot past a hapless Siddiq to make it 3-0.
Hougang’s top scorer Geison Moura would later double his tally on the night with an identical goal to his first strike, shooting at the Geylang custodian’s near post to seal matters at 4-0.
All in all, it was a night to forget for the Eagles who will have to recover from the crushing defeat ahead of their final match of the season against the Courts Young Lions.
