Match Preview: Geylang International vs Tanjong Pagar United
By Eagles Admin on 18 September 2014
Geylang International will kick-off their series of matches in round 2.5 of the S-League season against Tanjong Pagar United at the Bedok Stadium on Friday as they look to achieve the status of being the “best amongst the rest.” Over the coming weeks, teams from the bottom half of the table will play one match against each other to determine their final league position.
The Eagles, plagued by an injury hit start to the season, endured a stop-start campaign with a lack of consistency being a constant problem. Currently languishing in eighth position in the table, the Eagles are nine points behind Hougang United. With the aim of finishing as high as possible, Geylang International will be looking for a perfect start, in the form of a victory over Tanjong Pagar United.
Jorg Steinebrunner’s side suffered total capitulation, last time out in the league, as they surrendered a three goal lead to allow Albirex Niigata (S) to win 4-3. Judging by the reactions of the head coach and the players, the squad will be raring to make amends for the disastrous result .
In the two previous encounters between Tanjong Pagar United and Geylang International this season, the Jaguars have failed to emerge victorious. A 1-1 draw and a recent 2-1 victory mean that the Eagles will be seen as favourites for this tie.
Kento Fukuda and Yuki Ichikawa, two players who have been the bedrock of a usually, water-tight defence, are certain to start with Khairulnizam Jumahat and Joaquin Lopez expected to be fielded in the full-back roles. A fully-fit squad means that head coach Jorg Steinebrunner will have no shortage of options, and his array of choices will only be boosted by the form of Geylang’s prime league players. Fuad Ramli, Hyder Ismail, Shawal Anuar are expected to be given a nod as well, with a place on the bench.
As the matches come to a close in the season, the expectance is for the players to unleash their best performances and the tie between Geylang International and Tanjong Pagar United can only be an exciting affair, with the immense talents that will be on show for both teams.
