The race to finish top of the bottom 6 is well and truly on.
Geylang International welcome Hougang United to the Bedok Stadium on Tuesday as they look to leapfrog the Cheetahs into seventh place. To achieve their highest possible finish, the Eagles will have to beat Hougang and hope results go their way in the last game of the season.
But even before the thought of the last game is entertained, Jorg Steienbrunner will need his charges to give it their all against a Hougang side that needs just a victory to cement their seventh position on the table.
After narrowly losing out on a place in the top six after defeat to Balestier Khalsa, Hougang United have been a side reminiscent of the walking wounded, falling to defeats to the likes of Harimau Muda and Courts Young Lions.
Meanwhile, Geylang International have gone about their business quietly but efficiently, with convincing displays in the 2-1 wins over Harimau Muda and Woodlands Wellington.
Defender Yuki Ichikawa will be back in contention for a staring berth after recovering from an illness and he will play a key role together with compatriot Kento Fukuda in keeping the likes of Diego Gama and Geison Moura quiet. The Brazilian pair have already netted 27 goals in between them this season and the Japanese defenders will want to ensure this showdown between Japan and Brazil is more evenly matched than the one at the Sports Hub last week.
In their last two encounters, action was aplenty with both sides recording a victory each. Hougang United registered a 2-0 win at their home ground while a late Leonel Felice goal gave the Eagles a 3-2 win at the Jalan Besar Stadium.
With both sides possessing boisterous fans cheering the players on, Bedok Stadium is set for a carnival like atmosphere in what will be the last home game of the season.
