A spot in the Starhub League Cup semi-final awaits the winners of the knockout tie, as Geylang International battle it out with Albirex Niigata (S) at the Jalan Besar Stadium.
It is the second quarter-final clash for the Eagles this season ater a hard fought match with Balestier Khalsa, saw Geylang International cruelly knocked out of the RHB Singapore Cup at the same stage. But this time around, the Eagles are confident of avoiding an exit especially after ending the group phase with a convincing drubbing of Warriors FC.
When the group draw was made, not many in the local scene gave Eagles a chance. Grouped together with heavyweights Warriors FC and Tampines Rovers, the odds were firmly stacked against the Eagles. But with a 4-0 and 2-1 win respectively, Geylang qualified as group B winners to face group A runner-ups Albirex Niigata (S) in the quarter-finals.
The home side are on a good run of form having racked up three consecutive victories while Albirex Niigata (S) recently endured a 4-0 defeat to Tanjong Pagar before recording a 13-0 victory against Police SA.
The Eagles will welcome back Fabian Kwok, Mustaqim Manzur and Aliff Shafaein back to the starting 11 after the trio were given a much needed rest against the Warriors FC. Thorsten Schneider will be looking to add to his first goal for the club as he is primed to line up behind prolific forward Leonel Felice.
With the Japanese side’s forwards, Sakamoto and Nagasaki in fine form, much will be expected from compatriots Kento Fukuda and Yuki Ichikawa, both of whom are former Albirex players themselves.
Two sides promising to play flowing football and in confident form and mood, this live televised match promises to be a cracker for the viewing audience.
