Match Preview: Geylang International vs Albirex Niigata (S)
By Eagles Admin on 26 August 2014
Geylang International will return to home comforts on Thursday as they prepare to face Albirex Niigata (S) at the Bedok Stadium. The fixture sees the Eagles play a league match at their home stadium after a two month absence owing to maintenance works being carried out on the field.
The Eagles though go into the fixture buzzing with confidence after racking up two wins in the space of three days, defeating Woodlands Wellington 2-0 before a 2-1 victory over Tanjong Pagar United.
The visitors, meanwhile, are on a two game winless streak, after a 4-2 loss to Home United and a 2-2 stalemate with Tampines Rovers although the Japanese outfit can take heart from the way they came back from two goals down against the defending champions.
Head coach Jorg Steinebrunner will be able to choose from a fully fit squad and it is expected that Prime league player, Shawal Anuar will feature at some stage. The young winger impressed when he came on as a substitute against Tanjong Pagar United, being a constant threat on the right flank with his pace and trickery.
Current Sleague top scorer Kazuki Sakamoto will be a tough man to stop given his current imperious form but the key to thwart him could be in cutting out the supply to the front men. Full-backs Ridhuan Muhammad and Joaquin Lopez will need to be on hand to cut out crosses from the blanks as they look to keep a clean shit against the Japanese side.
In the last encounter between both teams, Geylang International emerged victors with a convincing 3-1 win and supporters will be keen to see a repeat of the performance and result.
With the match at Bedok Stadium set to be the last fixture in the first phase, the match is set to be a cracker and with the form they are in, the Eagles will be primed and ready to soar.
