Match Preview: Geylang International FC vs Hougang United FC
By Eagles Admin on 11 June 2013
The Starhub League Cup Group C will have its final game tonight at Bedok Stadium where the Eagles will play hosts to Hougang United FC.
Having previously beaten the Cheetahs 2-0 at Bedok Stadium back in March, Geylang International FC will be able to go into the game with a positive mindset and having not been beaten in the past four games.
Striker Shotaro Ihata is back from injury and may see some action tonight after managing to get into the team sheet in the last game though he was on the bench throughout.
Aspiring league cup quarter-finalists, Hougang United have had a rather patchy form going for them under interim coach, Johana Johari, but have recently beaten current league champions, Tampines Rovers, just two weeks ago in their Singapore Cup campaign. Along the way Johana have also masterminded a victory against DPMM FC who are tough nuts to crack in the league.
All three teams currently have not been assured of qualification into next round after three games played and with no goals scored. The result tonight will play a crucial part in determining who qualifies and we can expect Albirex’s coach Sugiyama to be watching the game keenly in the stands.
The lowdown on the situation in Group C is such ;
- If Geylang International wins, we will qualify along with Albirex Niigata FC (S)
- If Hougang Utd wins, they will qualify along with Albirex Niigata FC (S)
- If the game is a draw with a 0-0 score, placing will be decided on the number of yellow cards the teams have accrued.
- If the game is a draw with a 1-1 score or more, both Geylang International FC and Hougang Utd FC will qualify.
As such, tonight’s game will be like a final of sorts and will definitely be a game to catch. Past form will count for nothing and both teams can be expected to go at each other from the start for a place in the quarter-finals. A nerve-wrecking experience awaits but it is surely an experience not to be missed.
