Leonel Felice — The family man looking to send Eagles back to the top
By Eagles Admin on 23 February 2014
After a lacklustre 2013 campaign and coupled with the loss of captain and top goal scorer Jozef Kaplan, head coach Vedhamuthu Kanan went on a scouting journey to South America in search for a fresh face. A journey which saw the Eagles land their new Argentinean striker Leonel Ezequiel Felice.
In an interview with Geylang International’s Media Team, the forward explains how his move came about, his thoughts on Singapore, Geylang International’s hopes this season and his predictions at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
How did you start playing football?
I have always wanted to play football and I started out at Arsenal Fútbol Club (Argentinean club) before I got my first professional contract at 22 years old. Since then I have not looked back, played in Vietnam and now I am here at Geylang International and I want to do my best.
How are you finding Singapore so far?
I love it here in Singapore because it is a very safe country. Back in Argentina, in my home of Buenos Aires, it was quite dangerous and to be in safe and clean country like Singapore, it’s perfect for me and my family.
How did your move come about?
Coach Kanan went to Argentina to look for foreign players. I played in a few friendly matches and he liked my style of play. A transfer discussion was initiated by Coach Kanan and Team Manager Andrew Ang and the move was finalised soon after, along with Franco and Joaquin.
What do you think about the Club?
Geylang is a very good team and they are very professional. They have very good players and a good coach. Most importantly, they are all very good people. I like it very much here at Geylang, and my team mates have helped me to settle in Singapore quicker.
What are you targeting in your first season?
I will be happy if we finish in the top three. We have been working hard in training and with the quality of players we have, we cannot miss the top three. I have trust in the players. Some have played in the National Team and together we can help the team achieve our targets.
Personally, is there any pressure on you?
No. I don’t feel any pressure. Most important is for the team to win. As a striker of course I need to score goals but firstly I want the team to win and then next is for me to score.
Who is the best player at the Club?
Captain Ridhuan Muhammad and Mustaqim Manzur. They are very intelligent on the ball.
Who is the best player in the world?
Your football idol , growing up?
Outside football, what are your hobbies?
Spending time with my family. I only care about my football and my family. Most important for me is my wife and daughters (two and three years old). My wife is a teacher in Argentina and she left her job to be here with me. She feels great and at home in Singapore.
Your best football moment
In 2012, I scored in the last minute in the Vietnam league, and we won the game and secured the championship!
Finally, which country will win the World Cup this year?
Argentina! We have a good chance. The team is not just about Lionel Messi. There are many more world class players in the squad.
No chance for Kento and Yuki’s Japan then?
*Laughs aloud* No chance at all!
