Leo double downs The Jaguars

It was a night of Argentine delight on the pitch for the Eagles as Leonel Felice’s double helped Geylang International to a 2-1 victory over Tanjong Pagar United at the Queenstown Stadium.
The win brings the Eagles level with Balestier Khalsa on the S-League table in seventh position and it was a second win in three days for Jorg Steinebrunner’s charges.
It did not take long for the Eagles and Leonel in particular to stamp their authority on the game. After winning a free-kick in the opposition half, the Argentinian prepared himself in the penalty box. Mustaqim Manzur’s free-kick found the head of Leonel Felice who directed the header towards goal and past a hapless Aurelien Herisson in goal.
The rest of the first half saw the Eagles and the Jaguars battle in out in midfield where Franco Chivilo and Fabian Kwok seemed to be the victors with the former in particular, continuing on from where he left off in the previous match, winning possession and driving at the opposition.
As the teams headed for the break, matters were firmly in the Eagles’ hands with the score line reading 1-0.
The home side took the initiative in the second half and knocked on the Eagles’ door. The problem was that Kento Fukuda and Yuki Ichikawa were at the end of it. The Japanese duo cleared everything that came before them.
But a momentary lapse of concentration for the defender resulted in the equaliser. Firdaus Idros received the ball in the box and was allowed to turn Kento Fukuda before firing past Joey Sim in goal. The Tanjong Pagar players wheeled away in delight but the last laugh would be an Argentinian’s.
Just two minutes later, Franco Chivilo picked the ball up and drove at the Jaguars’ defence only to be dragged to the ground by the Tanjong Pagar defence. Leonel Felice picked up the ball and with the swivel of his right foot, powered the free kick into the bottom of the corner.
The Eagles could have added to the goal tally but the crossbar came to the rescue. Captain Ridhuan Muhammad went on a trademark sprint down the right flank before his cross found Hafiz Nor. The latter’s stinging shot cannoned back off the woodwork.
Despite heavy pressure from Tanjong Pagar, the Eagles held on to claim all three points.
Geylang International will next face Albirex Niigata(S) at the Bedok Stadium, on Thursday.
