In 2011, a Geylang International side emerged Champions in the Prime league competition. Some players from that squad have since made the step up to professional football with the Eagles’ S.League side. One of them is 24-year old defender, Khairulnizam Jumahat.
Khairulnizam sits down with the Geylang International media team to share his thoughts on his success at the Prime League level, as well as his thoughts on the current Geylang Internatonal squad amongst other matters.
How did you start playing football?
I went for an Under-18 trial at Geylang International with my friend, when I was 17 years old. From there, I was selected and I actually started my playing career as a right winger. I progressed to the Prime League squad and I am now happy and proud to be a member of the Geylang International S.League squad.
How was it like winning the Prime League?
It was definitely a rewarding experience. It was challenging, and because of the fact that we came from behind to win it, made me very happy and I am extremely proud of the team.
You are 24 now, what are your goals as of now?
My current goal is to play and perform my way into the first team. I want to be consistently playing in the first 11.
What are your thoughts about the season so far?
So far, we are doing well after a bad start. The new coach has been a good change and he has done well in focusing on our strength, plus he really motivates us. Since his arrival, he has made us play football with a positive mind-set.
Hougang United have been playing well recently. What are your thoughts on them ahead of the match? Any special words for your good friend and former teammate, Wahyudi Wahid?
Yes, Hougang United are doing very well. They have been playing together for some time so they have good teamwork and coordination. Wahyudi and I are good friends, but on the pitch, there won’t be any friendship!
Who is the best player at Geylang International?
Kento Fukuda. He is very composed at the back and organized the defence well. His positioning is exceptional and I see him as a leader on the pitch. Despite his young age, he is easily one of the best defenders in Singapore.
Who is your football idol?
Steven Gerrard. To me, he is the best player in the world. His work-rate is phenomenal and I admire his loyalty to his club.
What are you hobbies outside football?
Fishing and bowling. Twice a month, I will go fishing with my family. Since I was young, my family and I always go out to fish and it’s a great bonding activity.
What are your hopes for the season with Geylang International?
I believe we can at least secure a top five finish given that we have a very strong squad, in terms of the players we have. And once everyone starts peaking and gelling as a team, we can achieve our season’s target.
