In Focus: Fabian Kwok

Last week, the Eagles travelled to Johor to face Harimau Muda and comfortably beat the Malaysian side 2-1 with goals from Hafiz Nor and Kento Fukuda.
While the win was expected, the match featured a surprise as the ever reliable Fabian Kwok, stepped in to a central defender role due to the forced absence of regular starter Yuki Ichikawa. The Japanese defender had been ruled out due to a case of rashes.
The midfielder, who has enjoyed a stellar campaign this season doubling his goals tally from last season, repaid head coach Jorg Steinebrunner’s decision to field him at centre back with a man of the match performance.
Fabian’s display certainly left the German purring as he singled out Fabian for his consistent performances this season.
He said: “ Fabian was simply outstanding and it’s great for us that he performs like that.”
What was more eye-catching about Fabian’s performance as a centre back was the timing of it.
Just a day before, Singapore football fans on social media had been discussing potential central defenders for the national team on the back of consecutive, below par displays from first choice defender, Baihakki Khaizan. The former Eagle was culpable for both goals the Lions conceded against Macau in a 2-2 draw recently and was criticise roundly by fans and National team coach Bernd Stange.
With reliable and consistent performances at the heart of midfield, Fabian is growing from strength to strength and will be in for stern test against Hougang United as he looks to stifle the likes of Shunsuke Nakatake, Azhar Sairudin and Firman Hanif in midfield.
But with form on his side, and a character to always look for improvement, the sky is the limit for Geylang’s midfield warrior.
