Geylang United F.C 1 – 1 Woodlands Wellington
By Eagles Admin on 25 June 2012
June 25 2012– Last Thursday night, GUFC began the second round of the S-League against Woodlands Wellington at Bedok stadium. During the break, GUFC has enforced themselves with the likes of Serbian midfielder, Stefan Milojevic and centre back, Khayrulhayat.
Right from the kickoff, the Eagles implemented their flowing passing game but it was the Rams who took the first initiative at the Eagles goal.
From a corner kick, Rams defender, Fabien Lewis managed to break free of the defence but could only manage to head the ball above the post.
Shortly after on 22 minutes, Wellington’s star midfielder, Moon Soon Ho combined well with Hussien Ali Akil to put the Rams 1-0 up against GUFC. Hussien Akil started the initative, chesting the ball to Moon after receiving the ball from the midfield. Instinctively, Moon played a one-two pass and back-heeled the ball back to Akil, who sprang the offside trap and slot the ball past Yazid Yasin.
The Eagles almost found an equalizer after Michael King released Mun Seung Man down the left flank. Sensing that Milojevic was running behind him, Mun lured Rams’ defenders Daniel Hammond and Danny Chew with him and executed a brilliant back pass to free Milojevic down the byline.
Milojevic did well to run the ball down but his final ball was only seconds from reaching Rizawan when Woodlands’s defenders did well to recover and intercept.
Eagles then soon found the equalizer when a corner from Ang Zhi Wei made a mess in the Woodlands’s defence. The ball then fell to Mun Seung Man but his shot was cleared off the line by the Rams’s defenders. Syed Fadhil followed up with the rebound and it resulted in Woodlands handball in the penalty box. Match referee, Sukhbir Singh then blew for a penalty without hesitation.
Jozef Kaplan made sure there was no mistake as he slotted home from 12 yards.
King then nearly bagged a win for the team as he shot narrowly wide after Mun Seung Man released him with a neat pass down the flank.
Although we’re disappointed not to bag all three points, a job well done Eagles!
