Geylang United 1 – 2 Hougang United

12 July 2012 – On a cold windy night at Bedok Stadium, the Eagles felt the bite of the Cheetahs after a 93rd minute winner from Canadian striker Jordan Webb.
Making a several changes to the starting line-up, care-taker coach, Md Noor Ali started Khayrulhayat and Khairulnizam in defense while Michael King was only made the bench after an 11th hour recovery from a flu bug.
The game started with a high intensity with the Eagles imposing their passing game while Hougang pressed with zealous pressure. Possession of the ball was exchanged frequently after both teams tried to hog the middle of the park.
The first glorious chance came for the visitors just before the 40 minute mark when a cross from the left wing found Jordan Webb free in the penalty box. However, he could only blast his shot above the bar with his team-mates looking in frustration.
Seconds before half-time, Eagles striker Rizawan then had the chance to put his team ahead after a brilliant long punt up the field by Jozef Kaplan. However, Hougang’s defence recovered well to concede a corner kick instead.
Soon the half time whistle blew with the scores locked at 0-0. The second half would then be a very much different plot.
In the 48th minute, a free kick from Ante Barac down the right flank was not cleared cleanly by the Eagles’ defense. The ball would only fall invitingly for Mohamad Azhar, who unleashed a clean left-footed strike past Yazid Yasin into the bottom left corner of the goal.
The Eagles was once again punished again by a lapse of concentration in the defense which has happened so many times in the course of the season.
Nevertheless, down but not out. The Eagles immediately stepped up a gear and went very close to finding an equalizer when Jozef Kaplan headed straight at the post after King’s precise cross from the left.
However, the Cheetahs were not so fortunate the next time round. A similar cross from Khairulnizam found Mun Seung Man open in the penalty box. Stanislav Vidakovic did the best he could but could only commit a foul on Mun in the penalty box. Jozef Kaplan stepped up confidently once again to slam the ball past Hougang’s Goalkeeper Fadhil Salim.
Then…came the heartbreak.
Geylang’s backline was left exposed after the team pressed high for a winner. The speedy Jordan Webb then took full advantage of a Hougang’s counter attack. Cutting back Ang Zhi Wei twice, he launched a snap shot past Yazid Yasin, silencing the Bedok Stadium.
Nevertheless, like the Eagles motto says, we’ll always “Believe” and never give up.
We’ll be back.
