RHB Singapore Cup : Loyola Meralco Sparks 2 – 1 Geylang United FC (AET)

The match certain led up to its hype after the Eagles were defeated 2-1 by Loyola Meralco Sparks in a hard fought encounter. Thus, Loyola Meralco Sparks became the first foreign team to progress from the preliminary round of the RHB Singapore Cup.

The Eagles certainly started the brighter side as we bombarded the penalty box in the early minutes as we the Sparks struggled to keep us out of their half. After Michael King narrowly missed a freekick on 25 minutes, the Eagles then drew first blood after an attacking play which caused much confusion in the Sparks’s penalty box.

A cross by Rhema Obed was not properly dealt with by the Sparks’s defence as the ball fell¬†invitingly to King. He made sure there was no mistake this time as he slotted the ball into the net while Sparks keeper, Cuaresma could only look on despairingly.

Eagles went into the break with a l-0 lead but it wasn’t long after that the Sparks equalised. On 64 minutes, Sparks forward Hartman took advantage of a lapse of concentration in the Eagles defence as he launched an unstoppable volley pass Yazid Yasin.

The players from both side soon felt the fatigue of the up-tempo match as they started to suffer from cramps. The teams were deadlocked after normal time as coach Kannan tried to maintain the team focus during the full-time team talk.

However, things did not go according to plan as Sparks midfielder, Park gave them a lead after his strike deflected off Ishak Zainol after 95 minutes.

The Eagles did not let their heads down as they desperately toiled for the equaliser. Crosses were fired repeatedly into the opponent’s penalty box but the Sparks defenders were equal to it. At the death, ¬†Mun Seng Man almost became the hero for the Eagles when he found his way pass the Sparks goalkeeper but it wasn’t to be as he fired into the side netting.

Nevertheless, the Eagles will look to bounce back against the Woodlands Wellington at the start of Round 2 of the S-league!

Go,go Eagles!
