Our First Press Conference of 2013

Last evening at Livewire @ Marina Bay Sands, Geylang United Football Club has officially announced that they will be re-naming the club to Geylang International FC. Formerly named Geylang International Football Club before changing its name to Geylang United after the integration of the S-League, this rebranding initiative to cultivate the club’s rich history where they won several honors including 6 Premier League titles, 5 President’s Cup and 3 NFL Division 1 titles.
Thereafter, Vice Chairman of the club, Mr Lau Kok Keng then launched the new logo of the club. He was quoted saying “If you look at the old Geylang Football Club logo, you can see that the Eagle is actually trapped in a cage and the eagle also doesn’t have wings or eyes. The eagle in the new logo has a forward posture and defined feathers. This gives the eagle a sense of positive arrogance and its sharp beak and eyes signifies confidence. The eagle’s claw on the ball also signifies the brand of football the club will be playing, by keeping the ball on the ground.”
With several Ex-Geylang International player such as Samad Allapitchay, Malek Awab, Omar Ashiblie, Samsudin Rahmat and Ho Kwang Hock among the audience, the crowd were then taken on a nostalgic ride to the past with a video telling a story about the formation of the club in 1974 and the prestige of playing for the club. The main message of t he video is none other than saying many things can be bought with money but once history is written, it can never be bought.
Thereafter, our Chairman, Mr Leong Kok Fann then went ahead and presented the vision, playing philosophy and values of the club. He was quoted saying “Football, just like any corporate organization must be aligned by a set of values to ensure that everyone in the club is on the right track. We must work together as a team only then will the efforts be fruitful.”
The presentation of the club values was followed by the announcement of the SMU-Geylang International FC- Bedok View Secondary School mentorship programme. The mentorship programme will a number of thirty-six students from Bedok View Secondary School will be selected and mentored by members from the SMU students with the players and coaches from the club acting as the main facilitators for the program.
The club also announced a scholarship programme which will see three players (either from the S-League or Prime League) awarded $2500 to pay off part of their tertiary school fees. The scholarship recipients will be selected by S-League head coach Kanan Vedhamuthu and Prime League Md Noor Ali.
Last but not least, the 2013 S-League team was presented at the end of the conference with last season’s top scorer Jozef Kaplan announced as the captain of the side.
