Geylang International FC vs Tampines Rovers – Match Preview!

Facing defending champions Tampines Rovers in the first game of the season will certainly test the Eagles’ credentials after Coach Kanan Vedhamuthu decided to do a total revamp of the squad which sees the side only retain 5 senior players from last season. Nonetheless, Kanan has been quick to reinforce with the likes of Japanese forward Shotaro Ihata and Yasir Hanapi who were both stand-out performers for the Home United and LionsXII side respectively.

The Stags haven’t been slow to keep up as well with reinforcements like national frontman Khairul Amri and his former LionsXII teammate Shaiful Esah being the star local signings of the team. ┬áLastly, their marquee signing, Martin Wagner is a creative playmaker who would only further re-inforce the Stags already poweful attack.

Always an advocate of possession football, Kanan said of the upcoming match-up ” Playing the eastern derby is never easy. Tampines Rovers has physically imposing players which gives them an advantage over our relatively young side. The defence really needs to be on their toes to neutralize the opposition attack. Also, we’ll aim to use attack as a form of defence by stretching the play and tire out their players.”

The Eagles have not beaten the Stags on home soil since 2003 but hopefully all that will change today!
