Pre-season: Geylang International 1-0 Warriors
By Eagles Admin on 18 January 2014
Geylang International secured their first victory of the pre-season, with a 1–0 win over Warrior FC as their new signing, Argentinean forward Leonel Felice, netted in his first outing for the Eagles.
With their three Argentinean imports all making their pre-season debuts, Geylang made an impressive start to the encounter. Spraying the ball around the pitch, the Eagles were eager to take the early initiative, and it was not long before the Warriors’ custodian Neezam Aziz was forced into action, as a swift one touch play involving winger Hafiz Nor and Fabian Kwok saw the former take a shot from 30 yards out that went straight to the keeper.
The Warriors, who had started the match without most of their regulars, were almost made to pay in the 15th minute. After the initial corner had been cleared, the ball found its way to Captain Ridhuan Muhammad. The former Singapore International winger took on the full-back with ease and swung a cross in, which was met by the head of Geylang’s Kento Fukuda, who saw his header graze past the bar.
The rest of the first half saw Geylang dominate play, with No. 10 Franco at the heart of it all. After dispossessing the Warriors’ Tom Beattie of the ball, his delightful through ball found the overlapping Yuki Ichikawa. The right-back slid Ridhuan in, who stung the palms of the Warrior’s keeper. For the Eagles, the best chance of the half went begging.
As the referee signalled for the half-time break, the match was deadlocked at 0–0.
Geylang started the second half in similar fashion as the first, as Mustaqim Manzur, who had come on for Aliff Shaffien at the start of the second half, found Hafiz Nor with a pass. Hafiz ran at the Warriors’ defence and slid the ball through to Leonel Felice. The Argentinean turned his defender only to be brought down on the edge of the box. The resulting free kick paid no dividends as Franco blasted it over the bar.
The pressure soon paid off, as the Eagles took advantage of careless play by the Warriors. Collecting the ball from his full-back, the Warriors’ Shi Jia Yi looked to turn Ridhuan. The latter won the battle of the former national players and nicked the ball off Jia Yi before sliding Hafiz Nor through. Hafiz Nor took on his man before firing his shot towards the goal. His shot could only be deflected onwards by the keeper and Leonel Felice was on hand to thump the ball into an empty net. Eighty minutes gone and Geylang had scored their first goal of the pre-season.
The Eagles held on to their lead with ease as they closed off the match without much trouble. With the new season not far away, Geylang would certainly have been happy to get their first win and goal of the pre-season.
