Geylang and Albirex share Starhub League Cup spoils

It was certainly a less than electrifying match at Jurong East Stadium, home to Albirex Niigata FC, where the two clubs battled it out for a placing in the Quarter Finals in the Starhub League Cup. The outcome of the match turned out to be a less than satisfying 0-0 draw, not to the surprise of many as both teams put up lackluster attempts at attacks tonight.
The game kicked off at a leisurely pace with Albirex Niigata having most of the ball possession for the first half. The Eagles seemed hesitant to attack, passing the ball cautiously amongst each other before eventually losing it to the Albirex Niigata. With a minute of extra time added to the first half, the call for break came when a corner kick by Eagles’ Khairulnizam Jumahat was denied goal. Jersey number 10 Yasir Hanapi of Geylang International FC clocked a yellow card in the first half as well.
The second half commenced with a substitution for Geylang International as jersey number 13 Andrew Tan took on the field in the place of jersey number 18 Nurhazwan Norasikin. Albirex Niigata came close to a one-up advantage was when jersey number 11 Kazuki Sakamoto attempted a goal when the Eagles goalkeeper Takuma Ito came out of his zone to defend their territory, unfortunately missing the ball by inches. This attempt in the second half was met with much disappointment; Kazuki had a clear path to score the goal, but the ball had hit the goal post instead, deflecting the ball outwards.
Despite nearly letting in an unrestrained goal, Eagles goalkeeper Takuma Ito put up a good fight with Albirex Niigata’s continuous attacks. The Eagles had their fair share of goal scoring as well, with a few close goal attempts in the second half of the match. Unfortunately, the Eagles were recorded with two additional yellow cards at the 81st and 91st minute for jersey number 17 Jozef Kaplan and jersey number 12 Fabian Kwok respectively. The game came to an end after the two minutes of added time did not turn out fruitful for either of the teams.
With the two teams drawing at this stage, they will probably have to face off each other again to determine who gets a placing in the quarters. However, assistant coach of Geylang International FC Noor Ali is glad that they have not conceded any goals tonight. The team and its management will be looking forward to the next match as the team gears up to take its spot in the upcoming Quarter Finals.
