In Search Of Alternative Viewpoints Of Your Eagles’ Game ?
Fret Not, As The Eagles’ Media Team Brings You An Exclusive Post-Match Interview With Nobody But Only The Eagles’ Fans !!!
Today, we speak to a long-standing and zealous Geylang Supporter & Fan, Mohamed Rafe Bin Mohamed Yusof.
Question 1 : When did you first become an Eagles Fan ?
I have been passionately supporting the Eagles, ever since the inaugural S.League season began in 1996. From only 10 over supporters then, I managed to reel in more fans over the years and now the ‘Geylang Family’ have increased to over 300 fans. Whenever I support the Eagles, I always make sure that I bring along many fans as possible to keep the cheers ongoing, to root our Eagles all the way. Honestly, I have not missed any Eagles’ game this season, and can confidently say that I have only missed two Geylang matches in the past 19 years, due to personal reasons.
Question 2 : How did Geylang International perform against Balestier Khalsa ?
Every Eagles’ game, I desire and wish for a Geylang victory. Once again, I truly felt that we could have gone won given the number of goal-scoring chances. All the players gave their 100 percent and had many attempts at goal, but they just could not find the back of the net. Overall, I think our main obstacle was definitely Balestier’s goalkeeper, Zaiful Nizam as he stopped most of our efforts with brilliant saves. Nevertheless, I am happy with the draw result and the two goals by Jozef (Kaplan) and Bruno (Castanheira), were simply amazing.
Question 3 : Your thoughts about Yazid Yazin winning the April’s ‘Player Of The Month’ award ?
Absolutely correct. I strongly agree with the panel of judges whom selected Yazid as the ‘Player Of The Month’ in April. I personally feel that he has performed very well in the past few matches and has certainly been an infuriating obstacle to the opponents’ strikers because of his splendid saves. Furthermore, Yazid has single-handedly saved the Eagles’ lead against Home United and Warriors, in the past matches.
Question 4 : The Eagles have extended their unbeaten streak to three games after the draw with Balestier. Do you think Geylang can end the month of May on a high note by extending the streak and possibly get a win, against Hougang ?
Yes. Honestly, I believe that we can accomplish the task at Hougang. The team have gelled well now, as compared to the start of the season. The combination plays amongst players were not really present at the beginning. However over time, the teamwork has been improving and the bond between team mates is eminent. With the team training hard in each training session, we should be able to get the three vital points against Hougang, to end the month being unbeaten in the S.League.
Question 5 : Despite being 2-0 down, the Geylang crowd continued to cheer and support the Eagles throughout the 90 minutes. The cheering did not even stop after the final whistle. Is this, ‘never give up spirit’ always been in the Geylang Fans ?
This question reminds of an incident back in 2001. Geylang International also known as Geylang United back in the days, secured their second S.League title in 2001. The following week, GUFC were up against Home United in the ‘2001 Singapore Cup Final’ and everybody expected us to clinch the double. Unfortunately, we lost 8-0 to the Protectors. Despite being 4-0 or 6-0 down, we Eagles fans continuously cheered on Geylang for the full 90 minutes, non-stop. After that deed, we were awarded the ‘Best Fan Club’ award in 2001. Being the Eagles’ Fan Club Chairman from 1996, we have won three ‘Best Fan Club’ awards, thus far. I hope for all the Geylang fans to come back together and support the ‘soaring’ Eagles.
Question 6 : Do you think Geylang International Fans can win the ‘Best Fan Club’ award this year ?
I believe that we can win the award, as long as the Geylang International fans continue to support their team wholeheartedly and cooperate as one unit when the Eagles play. My deepest appreciation and gratitude to Ultra Eagles, Pertapis, Willing Hearts, Family and Friends of players and finally all the loyal supporters for their ardent support throughout the season. Let’s Soar Together To Greater Heights.
Question 7 : What would you like to say to the Eagles fans who missed the match today or watched it through television?
To all the Eagles fans out there around Singapore , I urge you to come down to the stadiums, be it ‘Home’ or ‘Away’, to witness games ‘live’. I assure that your presence, alongside your cheers, would motivate the Eagles throughout the match. You will also be able to feel the true hype and priceless excitement that I experience every single match. What are you waiting for ? Come and join us now to support the men in green.
In conclusion, I would like to say a big ‘Thank you’ to Mr Leong Kok Fann, Mr Andrew Ang, Mr William Tan, Mr Douglas Sim, all staff and fans of Geylang International for their constant support over the years.
