Eagles top Group B after 4-0 romp over Warriors
By Andrew Ang on 16 July 2014
Geylang International completed a clean sweep of the group stages after a convincing 4-0 victory over Warriors FC. The win means that the Eagles finish the group in first place and will play Albirex Niigata(S) who finished second in their group, in the quarter finals of the Starhub League Cup.
With qualification already secured, Jorg Steinebrunner chose to rest a couple of key players. Mustaqim Manzur, Fabian Kwok and Aliff Shafaein settled for place on the bench as the likes of Shah Hirul and Thorsten Schneider started for the Eagles.
With first place awaiting the winner of the tie, the opening minutes of the game saw cautious play from both sides. It was only in the 19th minute that the Eagles forced the first save of the match. Ridhuan Muhammad in trademark fashion blitzed down the right flank before his shot stung the palms of the Warriors goalkeeper. The Warriors side was content to sit deep and let the Eagles come at them and it seemed that it would take a set piece situation for Geylang International to score and it arrived.
A well swung in corner saw Kento Fukuda head the ball towards goal. The goalkeeper, under pressure dropped a clanger and helped the ball into the net, giving Eagles the lead.
Geylang International could have gone into half time two goals to the good, but Thorsten Schneider’s heavy touch while through on goal allowed the Warriors’ custodian to come out and clear his lines.
If the first half was low key, then the second half saw the Eagles turn up their game and give the fans plenty to cheer about.
Just after the beginning of the second half, a long ball into the box was brilliantly chested down by Thorsten Schneider and finished emphatically to double the away side’s lead. First goal in just his second game for Thorsten and he wheeled away in delight.
With the game in the bag, Geylang International brought on youngster Fuad Ramli. The young player capped off his night with a well taken goal. Receiving the ball outside the box, Fuad shot at goal and the goalkeeper’s slight touch was not enough to stop the ball from going in.3-0 to the Eagles and the fans were in utter delight.
The fourth official held his board up to signal three minutes of additional time but there was to be enough time for one more goal as Hafiz Nor was sent through on goal. The winger who had been a constant threat all night finished with a well taken strike to round off matters at 4-0.
Albirex Niigata(S) now await in the next round but with the way Geylang International have gone about their business in the toughest group they could have been drawn in, the sky is the limit for the overachieving Eagles.
