August 6 2012 – Yesterday evening at Bedok Stadium, the Eagles dumped Gombak United out of the Starhub League Cup after a goal by Korean midfielder Mun Seung Man was enough to give the home side a 1-0 victory over the Bulls.
The match started as a very tightly contested affair with both teams adopting a cautious approach. Fearing the potential consequences of shipping an early goal, chances were few and far between as both sides were reluctant to venture too much into the final third.
Nevertheless, the Bulls soon got their first chance of the game in the 7th minute. Midfielder Mustaqim Manzur shot just inches wide of a post after the Christopher Anderson did well from to release him from the flank.
Seven minutes later, a tug by the Eagles defence saw referee Ahnad A’Qashah award a free-kick to the visitors at the Eagles’ final third. K Vikraman took the kick and nearly succeeded in nearly fooling keeper Ridhuan Barudin after he went for a shot instead of a cross. However, Ridhuan Barudin recovered in time and managed to push the ball above the post to keep the scores at 0-0.
Eight minutes before the break, Gombak midfielder Hafiz Rahim made the most out of his speed after penetrating the left flank with his sublime dribbles. Sensing Anderson was lurking into the penalty box, Rahim then laid the ball to the oncoming Englishman. Anderson then did well to unleash a fierce shot towards Ridhuan’s goal but the Eagles’ number 1 was equal to his effort once again.
Looking for the missing link in the final third, Coach Kanan then decided to act. Missing the past 3 matches due to an eye infection, Mun Seung Man was brought into the fray right before half-time to sharpen the Eagles’ attacking threat.
The majority of the second half ended with both sides passing the ball around in the midfield, unable to penetrate the final third effectively.
But it wasn’t belong long the breakthrough arrived for the Eagles.
A long punt from the defense found Stefan Milojevic in the final third. The Serbian than did well to control the ball with his thighs before releasing Jozef Kaplan down the right flank with a marvelous through pass.
With Mun Seung Man then barraging through the middle, Jozef then instinctively played a low cross right into the Korean’s path. Mun Seung Man then took the opportunity with both hands and slotted the ball pass the hapless Zaiful Nizam.
As the clock winds down, the Eagles were feeling a bit of nerves and nearly conceded an equalizer when substitute Jung Hee-Bong shot just wide.
The Eagles are now through to the Semi-Finals of the Starhub League Cup!
