Eagles Sent Wasps Packing In Bedok Farewell

Geylang International upset the odds, as they made it two wins in a row on Thursday evening with convincing 2-0 win over Brunei DPMM.

Going up against the colossal Bruneian outfit, the Eagles were established as the underdogs, but were keen to end their stay at Bedok with a win before departing to Jalan Besar Stadium or Tampines Hub temporarily, whilst the track at Bedok Stadium undergoes renovations.

A goal each from Shahfiq Ghani and Victor Coto sent the Eagles into fourth spot, just three points behind league leaders, Albirex Niigata (S) FC.

The hosts got off to a perfect start when Shahfiq drew first blood in the 13th minute with a blistering volley into the roof of the net, after an intelligent cutback by Stanely Ng at the edge of the box.

Geylang continued to pile on the pressure after the opener, and almost got a second. Ricardo Sendra reacted quickly to Shahfiq’s looping free-kick and attempted a volley at goal from only five yards away. However, the former scoffed his shot with the ball ricocheting off his shin, and Wardun Yusoff comfortably collected the loose ball.

DPMM almost levelled matters in the 24th minute, as Rafael Ramazotti banged home a header into the net, after a well-worked set-piece. Nevertheless, the visitors’ celebrations were cut short as the goal was ruled out for offside, with the linesman’s flag breaking the Bruneians’ hearts.

On a special note, Geylang’s youngster, Darren Teh whom was slotted into the starting line-up for Faritz Hameed, did not look out of place, as his pace and tenacity kept Azwan Ali at bay. The young starlet, had nerves of steel coming out against DPMM’s seasoned strikers, but was cool as ice throughout the game, with clean tackles and nifty off-the-ball runs.

With the game slowly starting to heat up, Shahfiq could have registered his first hat-trick for Geylang, with his double thunderbolt strikes on the 31st and 42nd minute. However, Wardun was on par with the efforts and pulled off a great diving save to keep the deficit at one goal.

After the break, both teams were eager to grab the next goal in the match, and DPMM came really close in the 48th minute to clinch the equalizer as Billy Mehmet stung the palms of Syazwan Buhari with a hammering volley from 20 yards out.

Despite DPMM throwing bodies upfront, it was the Eagles whom grabbed the next goal to extend their lead to two goals in the 53rd minute.

After a miscommunication between Wardun and Yura Indera Putera in picking up a loose ball inside the box, Shahfiq attempted to nick it away to have a try at goal. However, Yura brought down the striker carelessly, and up stepped Coto, whom converted the resulting penalty for his second goal of the season.

Seven minutes later, Ramazotti was set up by Azwan inside the box but Anders Aplin put in a vital last-ditch tackle to deny the towering Brazilian.

Syazwan was extremely focused on keeping a clean sheet and did just that, as he produced a magnificent finger-tip save to deny Azwan’s dipping rocket with fifteen minutes left to play.

The last chance of the game fell to Geylang substitute, Shawal Anuar as the winger raced into the box and unleased a belter which sailed narrowly wide the crossbar. Nevertheless, it did not matter as the ‘greenwhitearmy’ secured another home victory and claimed three vital points in their quest to the top.

Speaking after the game, Geylang International’s Head Coach Hasrin Jailani, was delighted with his charges, “Everyone did well today, we more or less controlled the game today and did very well defensively, to shut out DPMM’s offensive prowess,” said Hasrin.

The 40-year-old also added, “The win is certainly a morale booster and the team is growing in confidence. However, we still got two more games to finish the first round, so it is back to the training ground tomorrow.”

Geylang International FC will now look forward to their next game against, the rampant Protectors of Home United FC at the Jalan Besar Stadium on 28th April 2017!
