Eagles Seek To End Spell At Hougang
By Eagles Admin on 27 June 2015
Geylang International FC will be eager to reverse their ill-fated fortunes at the Hougang Stadium, when they face Hougang United FC on Saturday night, in The New Paper (TNP) League Cup’s Group A fixture.
In a club friendly match against the Cheetahs, Geylang suffered a 4-1 defeat at the Hougang Stadium, a fortnight ago.
Close to a month ago, Hougang shattered the Eagles’ hearts as the Cheetahs clinched their first win of the 2015 Great Eastern Yeo’s S.League and ended Geylang’s three-game unbeaten streak, in an emphatic 1-0 victory at the same venue.
The last time Geylang ever emerged victorious against Hougang in the Cheetahs’ den, dates back to July 2013, as the Eagles’ two attempts in the 2014 S.League season were also unsuccessful and futile.
However this time round, the Eagles will need to break the hapless ‘spell’, to clinch a coveted spot in the knock-out stages of the League Cup, as the victorious side of the tantalizing fixture, is assured of a Semi-Finals’ spot, with one game to spare.
Both teams got off to winning starts on match day one, with Hougang overcoming the reigning League Cup champions, Brunei DPMM, while, Geylang saw off National Football League (NFL) side, Singapore Recreation Club (SRC).
Eagles’ Hafiz Nor would be keen to add more goals to his tally, in addition to his last week’s hat-trick hero performance against SRC. He will be well assisted by Bruno Castanheira and Jozef Kaplan whom will be spearheading the offense against Hougang.
Geylang would also need to be wary of Hougang’s revamped offensive plays as the Cheetahs punished the three-time League Cup winners, DPMM with a 1-0 score-line. Hougang made six new signings during the mid-season transfer window. They secured the signatures of Atsushi Shimono, Carlos Delgado, Delwinder Singh, Diego Gama, Fazli Jaffar and Vuk Sotirovic, whom all played a part in the victory against the Bruneians.
Geylang’s defensive duo Hafiz Osman and Kento Fukuda alongside their defence colleagues, will be on their toes at all times and be ready to put a stop to Hougang’s new-look offense. Particularly, they should be well aware of Vuk Sotirovic. The Serbian, scored on his debut last week and showed signs of a deadly eye for goal throughout the whole game, with his varied range of shots.
Both the Cheetahs and the Eagles do possess a productive frontline, with Diego Gama and Jozef Kaplan leading the attack respectively. Furthermore, many onlookers treat this mouth-watering clash, as a potential decider on who tops the group. Hence, expect goals to rain and challenges aplenty throughout the game at the Hougang Stadium.
The team which emerges as Group A champions, would be facing Group C champion, Albirex Niigata (S) FC, while Group A runners-up, would be facing Group B champions, which has yet to be decided amongst Tampines Rovers FC, Balestier Khalsa FC and Warriors FC.
