Eagles Kick Start TNP League Cup Mission Against SRC

11238278_1079880005359827_4526948821529483542_oAfter a month-long break, Geylang International FC will resume their 2015 campaign with, The New Paper (TNP) League Cup’s Group A opening fixture against National Football League (NFL) outfit, Singapore Recreation Club (SRC) at Jalan Besar Stadium on Tuesday night.

The Eagles will play their second successive Cup game and will definitely hope to secure another Cup victory after defeating Laotian side, Lao Police FC, in the preliminary round of the RHB Singapore Cup in May 2015.

In the League Cup’s 2014 edition, Geylang bowed out at the Cup Semi-Finals’ stage, as the Eagles were edged out in penalties, by the eventual champions, Brunei DPMM FC.

Geylang’s Head Coach, Jorg Steinebrunner highlights that his charges would be eager to go the distance in TNP Cup’s journey, but to qualify for the knock-out stage would be the first priority this year, and after which, to further last year’s achievement, would be the overall main target for the Eagles.

With an impressive offensive quartet of Tatsuro Inui, Bruno Castanheira, Hafiz Nor and captain, Jozef Kaplan, the Eagles would be expected to rain in the goals to bag the three points against the semi-professional side, SRC.

However, Geylang’s veteran custodian, Yazid Yazin warns his team-mates about being complacent and taking the NFL side for granted, but instead urges the Eagles to be determined and disciplined to achieve a positive result.

The 2014 Singapore FA Cup champions, SRC will be participating in TNP League Cup for the second year in a row and this time round, the semi-professional side are keen to make a greater mark on the big stage as compared to last year.

SRC’s Head Coach T.Ramoo shared that, despite the 2-0 and 1-0 defeats to Home United and Woodlands Wellington respectively in the group stages, the team performed beyond his expectations last year.

SRC were eventually eliminated from the 2014 League Cup in the Plate Semi-Finals last year after Balestier Khalsa triumphed with a 2-0 victory. This time round, the current NFL Division 1 leaders, SRC would be yearning to earn at least a point in the campaign and also give their S.League counterparts a run for their money.

SRC has a mixture of youth and experienced players whom were also former S.League players, including one-time Singapore international and former Tampines Rovers defender Shariff Samat.

Former Hougang United defender Firman Hanif is also in the SRC’s roster and is also currently one of the top goalscorers in the NFL Division 1 with four goals in five games. Precious Emuejeraye, who played for Home United in the 2014 season, is also pending clearance to be available for the tantalizing fixture against the Eagles.

Ex – Warriors FC nippy winger, Prakash Manikam is also in the dynamic SRC squad, alongside former Hougang United Prime League twins, Nurul Islam and Nazirul Islam. MediaCorp, Channel 5’s football-based reality series First XI’s prominent defender, Faliq Sudhir is also part of the vivacious SRC set-up.

The presence of these notable players, will certainly boost the team’s chances of gaining credible results in the competition and they will be raring to shine on the big stage with their spirited performances.

However, Geylang too are not lacking in motivation. The League Cup is the only domestic trophy they have never lifted since it began in 2007. The Eagles came close to the coveted trophy, back in 2012 as they ended only with a runner-ups finish.

This sole reason could see, Steinebrunner giving the competition his utmost attention and Geylang will be ambitious to clinch their first ever League Cup silverware.
