Geylang International extended their winning streak as the Eagles recorded an emphatic 3-1 victory against a gutsy Garena Young Lions side, on Thursday evening at the Bedok Stadium, in front of 1,331 spectators.

The elusive victory did not only propel the Eagles up the table to fifth place, but it also ensured that Geylang recorded their first back-to-back victories, after edging out reigning champions, Brunei DPMM 2-1, last week.

Geylang took an early lead through a Carlos Delgado spot-kick, but it got cancelled out by Fareez Farhan’s equalizing penalty strike.

With 15 minutes left on the clock, the Eagles rallied hard and sealed the victory with Yuki Ichikawa and Gabriel Quak, getting their names on the score sheet.

The ‘men in green and white’ came out storming right from the go and deservingly took the lead in the third minute.

Sahil Suhaimi, whom spearheaded the Geylang’s offensive line was brought down by Firdaus Kasman inside the box, during the Eagles’ first attack. The Argentine playmaker, Carlos then stepped up and converted the spot-kick perfectly, to not only give the Eagles the lead, but also net his fourth goal of the campaign.

The hosts could have doubled their lead in the 11th minute, when Sahil released Stanely Ng with a defence-splitting pass before the latter, fired straight at Benjamin Bertrand, whom made a good block with his feet.

Goalscoring chances was at a premium after that attempt, as the two sides committed fouls all over the pitch in a bid to gain supremacy, which disrupted the flow of the game, till the half-time whistle.

The visitors, came out after the break re-focused as they searched for the equalizer and possible three points that would lift them off the bottom of the table.

The Young Lions were given a morale booster as Patrick Hesse, introduced their experienced chief striker, Khairul Amri to lead the squad behind enemy lines, for the remaining 45 minutes.

True enough, in the 52nd minute, the talismanic forward, released Rusyaidi Salime in the 18-yard box, with a fine pass. However, Daniel Bennett whom was unable to track back in time, clashed into the young full-back and the Young Lions were awarded a penalty-kick.

With nerves of steel, the masked-vigilante, Fareez calmly dispatched the spot-kick into the bottom left corner to clinch the equalizing goal.

With the scores levelled, Geylang then decided to turn up the heat and introduced fresh pair of legs in the attacking third, to push for a winner. The Eagles, then executed a double substitution as speedy duo, Gabriel Quak and Amy Recha checked in for Isa Halim and Carlos Delgado, respectively.

The bold move reaped it dividends in the 75th minute, when a delightful corner-kick delivery by Stanely was well met with a towering header from Yuki Ichikawa. However, Bertrand whom initially caught the ball, inexplicably made a blunder and dropped it into his own net.

With the Young Lions pressing high and hard for the second equalizer, that allowed the space for Gabriel to land the knockout punch – a third goal. The Eagles’ wing wizard picked up an inch-perfect pass from Safirul Sulaiman, at the by-line and raced his way into the box. Gabriel then danced his way past three defenders, before simply passing the ball into net, to seal their third victory of the season.

Speaking after the game, Geylang International’s Head Coach Hasrin Jailani, was filled with mixed emotions about his charges, “You play well and then draw or lose; you don’t play well but win – which one is better? I prefer the three points, but at the end of the day we still need to go back home and see what we need to do,” said Hasrin.

The 40-year-old also added, “Today not one or two players were off, the entire team was not in sync. For me, we only started to play our game in the last 20 minutes, and that resulted in goals and three points.”

Geylang International FC will now look forward to their next game against Balestier Khalsa FC at the Toa Payoh Stadium on 14th May 2016!
