The Eagles finally broke the 11 match winless streak by trumping the Courts Young Lions to a 2-0 victory at Bedok Stadium with goals coming from Shah Hirul and the on-form Jozef Kaplan.
With his tenth goal of the season, Jozef Kaplan current stands at the league third-joint top scorer sharing the honors with fellow forward Jordan Webb from Hougang United.
The Eagles started brightly with Stefan earning a free-kick right at the final third of the Eagles half at 6 minutes. However, Jalal’s cross was cleanly held by Syazwan Buhari.
8 minutes later, the young lions conjured up their first initiative of the match. A cross from the left was wing was sneaked towards goal by the on running forward but the ball rolled past the wrong side of the post.
On 19th minute, the Eagles then proceeded to take a lead through defensive midfielder Shah Hirul. Boy, as his team-mates would call him, has made a significant impact since returning from a serious injury 2 months ago.
Receiving the ball at the edge of the penalty box after some good play from the flank, Shah Hirul smashed the ball to the top of the net to leave the Buhari hapless.
At 36th minute, a free kick was awarded at the edge of the box after some careless defending by the opposition. However, the free kick could only be directed straight at the wall. Thinking that there was no longer any further danger, the Eagles back line did little to chase for the ball. This then allowed the Young Lions to unleash a stinging shot which went narrowly wide.
3 minutes later, the Eagles played conjured up a beautiful attacking move that even Barcelona will be proud off. Robbing the young lions of the ball in their own half, Fabian played a one-touch pass to fellow midfielder, Shah Hirul. Sensing Hazwan bursting down the flank, Shah Hirul immediately lobbed the ball down to put Hazwan in a 1-on-1 situation with the Young Lions keeper. Dashing out of his goal-line, Buhari could do nothing as Hazwan lobbed the ball over the opposing keeper just to see the ball bounce narrowly wide.
The Eagles were unlucky again not to take a two goal lead into half time after Jozef Kaplan was caught narrowly offside as he slotted the ball into the net after a nice through pass by Fabian.
The second half was largely a drab affair with Young Lions only significant chance of a equalizer coming in the 65th minute after the Young Lions striker Jonathan Toto managed to whizz pass Yazid Yasin but all his good work came undone when he could only slam the ball into the side netting after bursting clear.
As the clock winded down, it was apparent that the Young Lions are fast running out of steam and Jozef Kaplan finished another counter attack by the Eagles by sliding the ball home in the 86th minute to secure victory for the Eagles!
Well done Eagles!
