Geylang International finally claimed a victory after back-to-back winless results, as they defeated Garena Young Lions 2-0, to pursue the club’s ambition for at least a top-three finish, in the Great Eastern Yeo’s S.League.

The Young Lions’ custodian, Fashah Iskandar conceded a howler own-goal, which awarded the opener to the Eagles, before Stanely Ng doubled the lead before the end of regulation time, to kill off the Singapore U-21 developmental side.

The game started off with the visitors vigorously thumping effort after effort against the gutsy, Young Lions.

Sahil Suhaimi had an early attempt to draw first blood with a volley from the edge of the box, after being released by Anders Aplin’s long punt forward. Nevertheless, the blazing shot sailed narrowly above the goal, in the third minute.

The hosts, had a wonderful go at breaking the deadlock when Ashrul Syafeeq, rose the highest to steer in a header at the far-post, but Syazwan Buhari palmed away the attempt, from point-blank range.

Soon later, Shawal Anuar had a triple chance to score within the space of 20 minutes, but the former failed to put the ball into the net on all three occasions.

Firstly, Shawal tested Fashah with a 20-yard stunner, but the latter executed a brilliant flying save to deny the attempt. 10 minutes later, Fashah pushed away Gabriel’s point-blank effort, towards Shawal, whom agonisingly missed the mark.

The last opportunity came during the 30th minute, when the fleet-footed winger dribbled past the back-line and released a venomous strike. However, Rusyaidi Salime’s timely block proved the difference, as he obstructed the golden chance, to ensure both teams headed to the dressing-rooms with a goalless stalemate.

The second-half proved to be an exciting one in contrast to the first, as both sides begun to conjure up opportunities.

Three minutes after the restart, Yuki Ichikawa timed his run to perfection and hanged well in the air to direct his header past Fashah, but Joshua Pereira was at the right time, right place to hack away with a goal-line clearance.

Nevertheless, that controversial miss proved to be inconsequential, as Geylang got their opening goal in the 50th minute. Fortune was indeed kncking on the doors of the Eagles, as Fashah inadvertently pushed the ball into the net, after Gabriel Quak’s harmless header drifted across the face of goal.

Shocked that they conceded a goal after defending well to deny their opponents any chances prior to that, the Young Lions, started trying to fix things and pushed numbers forward to find an equalizer as soon as possible.

The nation’s young guns almost clinched the elusive equalizer in the 73rd minute, when Ashrul lashed a vicious rocket from a few yards out, but Al-Qaasimy placed his body on the line and made a perfect block.

With a slender-one goal lead, the Eagles needed another to hand a knock-out blow and possibly bag the three points. The ‘Bedok-based’ team did just that, when substitute, Stanely Ng cleverly flicked on a header from Safirul Sulaiman’s dipping free-kick, to slide the ball past the rooted Fashah.

Looking to seal the match beyond the Young Lions’ reach, the Eagles went on a flurry of attacks in the closing stages of the match and time soon expired, as the final whistle followed soon after.

Speaking after the game, Geylang International’s Head Coach Hasrin Jailani, was expecting more, but is contented with the win, “In the second half, we came back stronger and we needed that little bit of the luck to score the first goal. The most important thing was that we scored and a win is a win. Every game from now is very important because we are trying to finish in third place. Hougang have it in their own hands, but for us we just have to keep winning games”.
