Eagles crash to defeat at Hougang
By Andrew Ang on 24 June 2014
A win is badly needed to rejuvenate the Eagles after stalemates against Courts Young Lions and Brunei DPMM and a surprise defeat to Harimau Muda last Thursday.
However, despite the numerous chances created against Hougang United last night, the Eagles just could not score.
While the team received a boost from the signing of Thorsten Schneider, he did not feature in this evening’s lineup. Leonel Felice spearheaded the Eagles attack with Aliff Shaffein playing behind him, but the duo could not find a way to get the ball past Hougang United’s keeper, Fadhil Salim.
Both teams began the match looking to find their rhythm, but it was Hougang United gaining the initial advantage by stringing together some successful passes. They had a goal disallowed for offside in the 15th minute, but they made no mistake three minutes later when striker Diego Gama put the ball past keeper Joey Sim.
The Eagles strove for an equaliser and eventually put the ball in the back of the net in the 24th minute, but the goal was ruled offside by the match officials.
Even playing on an away ground, the Geylang International supporters made their presence felt with loud cheers and drum rolls.
In the 32nd minute, powerful striker Leonel Felice sent a low drive towards goal after a great team build up, but Fadhil Salim superbly denied the effort.
Joey Sim, replacing Siddiq Durimi in goal, was calm and composed despite the endless threats offered by the home team, while the defensive pairing of Fukuda and Ichikawa were steady throughout the first half.
The hardworking Aliff Shaffein orchestrated several goal scoring opportunities for the Eagles but they were unlucky not to pull a goal back before the half-time whistle was blown.
Geylang International looked to get back into the game in the second half, and they made their intentions known with the first substitution of the game, replacing Khairulnizam Jumahat with dynamic midfielder Shah Hirul.
Eagles’ captain Ridhuan Muhammad showed glimpses of his ability to get past defenders from the wings, and he created a chance for Mustaqim Manzur, only for Fadhil to deny them again.
Mustaqim Manzur was everywhere in the attack, and with his tireless display, he tried his best to get the Eagles back on track but could not find a way past the Hougang United goalkeeper.
Unfortunately, few minutes later, Geison Moura stung the Eagles with the second goal of the game, scoring from a rebound after his initial shot was parried away by Joey Sim.
Geylang International pushed numbers up the field in search of a goal, which left their defence exposed. And they were almost punished by a quick counter-attack from the home team, but the alert Joey Sim was was able to come out best in a one-on-one situation.
In search of goals, Geylang made its final two substitutions of the night, with talented youngster Fuad Ramli and Jalal Jasim coming on for Aliff Shaffein and Joaquin Lopez respectively.
With 15 minutes left on the clock, the Eagles piled on the pressure, with Franco Chilivo coming closest to a goal after an exchange of passes, but Fadhil Salim again denied the Eagles.
Despite three minutes of additional time at Hougang Stadium, the match ended 2-0 in favour of the home team.
