Eagles Conclude Season With A Massive Win Against Rhinos

It was goals-galore at Bedok Stadium, as Geylang International put on a clinical display to put six past Warriors FC, to conclude the 2015 S.League season, with an emphatic 6-0 finish, which is also the Eagles’ highest winning margin.
Geylang’s forwards, Bruno Castanheira and Jozef Kaplan scored a brace each, to be tied as the club’s top goal scorers with 12 goals, whilst Yuki Ichikawa and Hafiz Nor also got their name onto the score sheet, on Friday evening.
Geylang’s impressive win over the last season’s champions, Warriors, allowed the Eagles to end the season on a high note after being undefeated in the last five fixtures and the positive result, also allowed them to overtake Courts Young Lions, to finish in eight spot.
The Eagles’ first opportunity to break the deadlock came in the sixth minute when Bruno Castanheira fired a shot at goal after beating the entire Warriors defence, but the effort slammed against the side-netting.
However, it was Yuki Ichikawa whom opened the scoring in the goal-fest as the Japanese centre midfielder launched a 25-yard long-range rocket, into the back of the net, in the ninth minute.
The opening goal seemed to puncture the Rhinos’ confidence and a few minutes later, the puncture wound deepened. Geylang added more damage as the Eagles doubled their advantage through Castanheira. The Japanese striker pounced on Shawal Anaur’s wayward pass and then took his time to place it around Warriors’ custodian, Daniel Ong, in the 13th minute.
With an early comfortable lead, Geylang began to remove the foot from the accelerator, as the Eagles sat back and soaked in the pressure from the Rhinos.
Just before the half-hour mark, Warriors were gifted with a chance to cut the deficit. However, Hafiz Rahim was slow to react in front of an open goal,as the goalkeeper, Yazid Yazin managed to smother the ball with a diving save.
As half-time loomed, Fazrul Nawaz struck a sweet strike past Yazid Yazin, to put the ball into the back of the net on 41 minutes, but his goal was chalked off by the linesman for being offside.
After the break, both sides went on the offensive from the go, as they were eager to score goals before the last 45 minutes of the season expired.
Warriors’ attack regained life, when Hafiz Rahim had a crack at goal from distance in the 54th minute which blazed over the bar. In the 61st minute, Hafiz Rahim then relayed a through ball to Karlo Ivancic, whom slashed his shot into the side-netting
On the other hand, the Eagles’ fans were confident yet cautious as they were worried that the men in green and white would allow their two goal-lead to dissolve once again, like they did against Courts Young lions, two weeks ago.
Instead, the Geylang players had a surprise in return for the fans supporters, family and friends, as the Eagles turned up the heat and soared to greater heights, in the final moments of the game.
In the spell of 11 minutes, Geylang pounded the net four-times and sealed the deal on an illustrious victory against the uniformed giants, Warriors FC.
Hafiz nor whipped in a delicious cross towards the Eagles’ captain, Jozef Kaplan whom then executed a first-time volley past Ong, to send the Geylang fans into boisterous chants, in the 79th minute.
Barely a minute later, the provider turned scorer and vice versa. Hafiz Nor picked up a pass from Ichikawa and raced towards goal. The Eagles’ nippy winger then exchanged a one-two pass with Kaplan, before releasing a scorching attempt into the back of the net.
The Slovakian forward, Kaplan then produced a similar effort in the 82nd minute as Kaplan scorched the net with an unstoppable screamer beyond the reach of Ong for the Eagles’ fifth goal.
Hafiz Nor then provided another assist in the 86th minute to find Castanheira and the latter rifled past Ong to place the icing on the cake for Geylang as they ended their season on a high.
Geylang’s Head Coach Jorg Steinebrunner, was full of praise of his side and shared, “Today, it was simply about not taking things for granted and playing football with true character.”
