Community Initiative – SMU/BVSS Mentorship Programme Year End Function
By Eagles Admin on 11 October 2013
In January 2013, Geylang International FC collaborated with Bedok View Secondary School and Singapore Management University’s (SMU) Men’s and Women’s Soccer Team to pilot a mentorship programme for the Secondary 2 students at the School .
This initiative is part of the club’s mission to provide our youths mentoring to realise their full potential in the cognitive, social and physical domains.
The undergraduates from the SMU Soccer Team provide weekly mentoring sessions for 20 students beginning with ice-breaker games alongside tutoring and life coaching. Progress of the students is tracked to ensure that the engagement is fruitful.
To complement a normal class , the focus is on helping our students to find meaning and motivation in their academic subjects and more importantly relationship skills and self-confidence.
10th Oct 13, was a meaningful and eventful day for the mentors and students – a year end function to mark the successful and fruitful journey of the mentoring programme. The event was held in BVSS and attended by:
- Jeffrey Low (Principal BVSS), teachers and 20 students
- Miss Tan Siok Sun (Advisor to President Office) – SMU, 5 staffs and 10 SMU undergraduates
- Mr Leong Kok Fann (Chairman GIFC), Mr Lau Kok Keng (Vice Chairman GIFC), V. Kanan (Head Coach GIFC) and 6 S League players
Jeffrey Low, Miss Tan Siok Sun and Mr Leong Kok Fann gave inspiring speeches and they agreed the mentorship programme will be a model that will be continued for next year and more students will be inducted.
Impromptu speeches by the mentors and students on how they benefitted and enjoyed each other’s company during the period of the programme proved that GIFC has taken the right approach to enhance community outreach and giving back to the community what the club has benefitted!
We look forward to another successful mentoring programme in 2014.
