Castanheira Ends Eagles’ Winless Streak With A Hat-Trick
By Eagles Admin on 5 October 2015
Geylang finally claimed a win after more than five months without tasting a victory in the Great Eastern Yeo’s S.League, as they deservedly beat Courts Young Lions 3-2, thanks to the man of the match, Bruno Castanheira.
The speedy Courts Young Lions’ duo, Jordan Webb and Shameer Aziq were at it again, as they both grabbed a goal apiece while Geylang’s samba boy, Castanheira stole the show with three goals to his name.
The positive result increased the Eagles’ point-tally to 17 points, and Geylang are now only two points behind their competitors, Harimau Muda and Courts Young Lions, despite having two games in hand.
The game started off without any side gaining the upper hand, as both sides were trying their best to keep the ball around and penetrate when given the space.
The first chance for the Eagles fell to Jozef Kaplan in the 16th minute. The Slovakian forward was quickest to react to a rebound as he smashed a volley goal bound. However, Sheikh Abdul Hadi made a timely block and cleared the ball to safety.
In the 25th minute, the Young Lions’ beautiful ‘tiki-taka’ passing paid off, as Jordan Webb, mazed his way past the Eagles’ defence and broke the deadlock, with a sublime finish from an acute angle on the right flank.
The game started to heat up only after the opening goal. The Eagles started to flex their strength to force an equaliser to get back into the game while the Young Lions were on the hunt to increase their lead.
Ten minutes later, the Eagles drew back level, with a possible, goal of the season contender. Castanheira timed his run to perfection to meet Mustaqim Manzur’s corner-kick delivery and he then, executed a magnificent first-time volley, to smash home the equalizing goal.
Towards the closing stages of the first-half, both teams had golden opportunities to put their team ahead before the break, but Young Lions’ M.Anumanthan and Eagles’ Hafiz Nor, respective attempts were futile, despite just being yards away from the goal.
After the break, the Eagles finally took over the lead as Castanheira recorded his second goal of the night in the 58th minute. Mustaqim’s remarkable defence splitting through ball, allowed Castanheira to break free from the defence and the latter, then smashed home an exceptional first-time shot past Rudy Khairullah.
However, the Eagles’ lead and joy barely lasted for five minutes, as Young Lions’ Shameer Aziq responded with an equalizer. The nippy winger netted the equalizer with a diving header from close range, after pouncing onto Jordan Webb’s knock down header.
However, things started to turn ugly with 18 minutes left to play, as Courts Young Lions were reduced to ten men after the influential midfielder, Afiq Noor received his second caution and was given his marching orders into the dressing room.
With the numerical advantage, Jorg Steinebrunner ordered his charges to go for the kill and the Eagles did just that as Castanheira came to the fore once again. Geylang regained their lead in the 76th minute, as Jozef Kaplan capitalized on Fadli Kamis’ misplaced pass before relaying it over to Castanheira whom calmly slotted the ball into the net, to not only seal his hat-trick but also Geylang’s fourth victory of the season.
Speaking after the game, Geylang International’s Coach Jorg Steinebrunner, was delighted with the team’s performance but also took note that, his side had made things difficult for themselves by conceding simple goals. “We cannot play 20 minutes good and then have five minutes with the foot off the gas pedal,” said Steinebrunner.
The German tactician also added confidently, “Every game you have to try and get a point. The win is good for us, as we are now in touching distance of Young Lions and Harimau Muda”
The Eagles will now look forward to their next game against Harimau Muda, at the Hang Jebat Stadium, Malacca on 18th October 2015!
