5 Questions in 5 Minutes with Young Eagles’ Sizzling Striker Shafeeq Faruk

Question 1 –

Shafeeq, how has your journey been as a Geylang International FC player ?

Ans: I made my Prime League (PL) debut last season, when I was 18 years old. It was a great year for the Young Eagles back in 2014, as we finished 3rd in the Great Eastern-YEO’S Prime League. Furthermore, I managed to be the league’s third top goal scorer as well. I was quite pleased with myself last year, but now I am ready to challenge myself to greater heights this season. I am currently leading the Prime League 2015 top goal scorer charts with 11 goals. I would like to thank all my teammates for being determined and having the zealous fighting spirit for both trainings and games. And not to forget, a big, ‘Thank you’ to Coach Velez(last season’s PL coach) and Coach Hatta (current PL coach) for believing in me.

Question 2 –

The Young Eagles had a slow start to the season, despite winning their opening league game, 4-2 against the Young Stags. Over time, Geylang has managed to climb up the standings and are currently fourth in the table and are two points behind the league leaders, Home United FC. Your thoughts about the team’s performance ?

Ans: Yes, I do agree that it has been a slow start, just like the year before. However, this time round, we were able to pick ourselves up faster and started to win games confidently. The Prime League has never been a sprint, but a marathon and I feel that if we keep up our good performances, we will be able to finish the season on a high. Honestly, I feel that the team has been awesome and very focused in both training session and games. There is no specific heartbeat of the Young Eagles, but instead it is a collective team effort. But if I have to highlight a few inspirers, it would be our Right-Back Wyldan Wisam for his consistency and 110% effort each game. Adding on to the list would be also the wingers, Brandon Koh and Jonathan Tan.

Question 3 –

Feeqy, you are currently both the club and the Prime League’s Top Goalscorer for this Season. How do you feel about that and who do you idolize in the world of football and why ?

Ans: I am actually quite surprised for leading the top goal scorer table, but I really hope to keep it up and continue to score for my team as we edge nearer to the end of the season. My idol has been Neymar from Brazil and FC Barcelona. I love how he gets past players utilizing his speed and skills. I try to emulate my idol from time to time and learn a lot from watching his videos.

Question 4 –

Geylang and Tampines go way back in terms of rivalry as the battle for the title, ‘Pride Of The East’ always comes into play. How is Coach Hatta and the team gearing up for this possible fixture which could make or break your season and are you confident of clinching a victory at the Eagles’ Nest ?

Ans: Coach Hatta has been quite calm and relaxed about every game, regardless who the opponents are. However, I am sure he wants nothing less than a victory tomorrow so that we can top the league table. For us players, we know that Tampines are no pushovers and are tough side. However, I am assured we will not back out or be fearful as we will play to our best and will not give up till the final whistle. Honestly, anything can happen, but I am confident that we can get the win, if the team plays to our strength and not be complacent, if we get the lead. Furthermore, I will be playing against my cousin, Hyder Ismail whom left Geylang for Tampines during the Transfer Window. It’s going to be an interesting match and my focus for tomorrow will only be the Eagles and scoring goals.

Question 5 –

Any words to the dedicated Eagles’ Fans/Supporters and Eagles’ Ultras whom might make their way to Bedok Stadium to rally on their favourite team, GEYLANG INTERNATIONAL ?

Ans: Firstly, thank you all family members, fans, friends and supporters for you constant support and presence for both the S.League and Prime League teams. Do come down and support the Young Eagles as your support and cheers would really motivate the team to do better. I am aware that S.League games are great to watch but, Prime League games are equally entertaining, as there are many strong teams and budding starlets in the making. So, I will see you at Bedok Stadium at 8pm on Saturday.

Thank you & GeylangBoleh!
