Geylang International’s Defender With Handsome Good Looks, Anders Aplin Shares His Views & Opinions About Being An Eagle.

5 Questions in 5 Minutes with Eagles’ Handsome “HULK” Anders Aplin

Question 1 –

Geylang has managed to score four goals in six games prior to the RHB Singapore Cup, but against Global-Cebu you guys managed to put the ball in the back of the net four times. How does it make you feel and what does it mean to squad?

Ans: We knew that finishing and scoring goals was an issue for us at the start of the season. Hence, that was something we worked on a lot on the training ground, especially individual sessions after team trainings. The performance during the Global game showed us that hard work pays off and the come-back from 4-2 to 4-4 surely gives us the confidence to score goals and grab points, going into the second half of the season.

Question 2 –

Geylang has always been known as a fan-orientated team. Being a rookie to the S.League and especially with the Bedok-based club, how have the GIFC fans impacted you and how have you been settling in the Eagles’ camp? Any words to the ‘journey to the west’ travelling fans for tonight’s ‘Eastern Derby’ clash of the titans?

Ans: I am always amazed at how passionate the Geylang fans are, especially the Ultra Eagles. I have immense respect for them for the support they have shown throughout our highs and lows. Growing up in the National Football League (NFL) scene and making the switch to Geylang was not easy but the players, coaches and fans have been very supportive and eased that transition. I hope we can do them proud on the field. Thanks again for the support they have shown. Geylang would not be the same without them and I would like to repay them with my 110% on the pitch.

Question 3 –

With seasoned veterans like Shariff Samat and Daniel Bennett parting ways with the Eagles from last season, please do share on how they have played a part in your development and how are you coping with filling their ‘big’ boots in Geylang’s backline. How do you feel facing your so call senior and ‘guru’, Daniel Bennett when u go up against him tonight?

Ans: They were huge role models for me last year, with the guidance and pointers they gave on and off the pitch. Thankfully, the senior players like Yuki, Isa and Faritz are still here to give advice. It is never easy filling those ‘big boots’ but I will give it my best shot. Daniel was a role model for me so I observed and learned from him when he was with us last year. Maybe I have picked up some tips on how to deal with him and other colossal players. I have much respect for Dan but I will put all sentiments aside when I go up against him.

Question 4 –

Facing the star studded Stags’ tonight away from home, at Jurong West Stadium, how has the team been preparing? Any special training being enforced – (possession, pressing, set-pieces or etc)?

Ans: It was indeed cruel to lose to Global on penalties especially after the performance we put in and the resilience we showed, but we can take many positives out of that game and learn from our mistakes. We will approach the Tampines game with the same attitude and mind-set. I really hope we can get the three points and spring a surprise to come out tops in the Eastern Derby. However, my ultimate goal would be to keep a clean sheet and be defensively disciplined.

Question 5 –

Any comments about the team playing three games in the space of nine days. Is the team up for it and which would you put more focus on – S.League or The New Paper (TNP) League Cup?

Ans: It helps that the morale in the squad is good and hungry for success. We’re in good health with respect to injuries so we can approach these games with confidence. I do not think we would give up one for the other. Both fronts are equally important as TNP League Cup is an opportunity for us to clinch some silverware and we also definitely want to improve on our league standing from last season. Nevertheless, if our performances are positive, winning results will come in.
